TANGMARG CHECKPOST, Dec. 27, 2025 — The drive to Gulmarg, the popular winter resort in Jammu and Kashmir, faced major disruptions on Saturday as authorities implemented a “Zero Tolerance” crackdown on vehicles without snow chains.

The road from Tangmarg to Gulmarg, covered in roughly six inches of hard-packed ice, has become hazardous, prompting the J&K Traffic Police to turn back all private cars and tourist taxis that are not equipped for the conditions. Only four-wheel-drive vehicles such as the Thar or Fortuner with winter tires or standard cars fitted with iron chains are allowed to proceed.

Impact on Travelers

Thousands of visitors were forced to park their rental cars in Tangmarg and rely on local “chained taxis” to complete the climb to the ski destination. The sudden surge in demand has created long wait times, sometimes up to 90 minutes, and a shortage of available vehicles.

Return trips from Tangmarg to Gulmarg now cost between ₹1,800 and ₹2,500, depending on the vehicle type. Unregistered touts have been reportedly asking as much as ₹4,000, making it essential for tourists to stick to the official Tangmarg Taxi Union counter near the bus stand.

Tips for a Smoother Journey

Travel experts recommend pre-booking a chained taxi through your hotel in Gulmarg. Most establishments can arrange a driver to meet you at the Tangmarg parking area, helping visitors avoid long queues and ensuring a safer ride to the hill station.

Authorities have emphasized that these measures are necessary to prevent accidents on icy roads and to maintain orderly access to Gulmarg’s slopes.
