GULMARG, Kashmir — With the end of the year approaching, Gulmarg and Pahalgam are preparing for what officials describe as one of the busiest New Year periods the valley has seen in recent years.
According to the Kashmir Tourism Department, nearly 98 percent of registered hotels in both destinations are already fully booked for the New Year weekend. The surge is being driven by consistent snowfall and growing demand for what local operators are calling a “White New Year” experience.
“No Vacancy” signs are now common across the two hill towns, leaving limited accommodation options for travelers who have not yet made reservations.
Different Celebrations, Different Moods
Gulmarg, Kashmir’s main ski destination, is expected to host the largest crowds. Resorts and hotels are planning extended evening activities, including night skiing and light displays, weather permitting. The Gulmarg Gondola is scheduled to operate later than usual on December 31 to allow visitors to catch sunset views.
Hotels near the ski slopes are organizing indoor events, with live music and après-ski gatherings becoming the focal point once temperatures drop after dark.
In contrast, Pahalgam is preparing for a quieter celebration. Resorts along the Lidder River are arranging bonfires and folk music performances, with Chakri songs replacing electronic music. These events are aimed largely at families and travelers seeking a calmer start to the new year.
Options for Late Planners
Travelers without confirmed hotel bookings are being advised to consider alternatives.
Sonamarg, now more accessible following the opening of the Z-Morh Tunnel, has emerged as the most practical option. Located about two hours from Srinagar, it offers reliable snow conditions and limited availability in larger hotels.
Within Srinagar, houseboats remain one of the few options with vacancies, particularly on Nigeen Lake. While they do not offer ski access, guests can expect quieter surroundings and views of the city’s New Year fireworks near Hari Parbat.
Traffic Advisory
Authorities are also warning of heavy traffic on the Tangmarg–Gulmarg road, especially between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on December 31. Travelers heading to Gulmarg are advised to leave Srinagar by 7:30 a.m. to avoid delays.
With snowfall, packed hotels, and celebratory events all converging, officials are urging visitors to plan carefully, remain flexible, and allow extra time for travel during what is shaping up to be one of Kashmir’s busiest winter weekends.
